Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is the surgical repair of the labia majoron (inner lip) which is located just below the labia major (outer lip) or the outer lip, also known as the large lips of the vagina. Labium minors, that is, inner lips do not contain fat and hair cells, are not seen from the outside because they are located under the labium major, rich in blood vessels and nerve endings, are constantly moist structures. The inner lips are two pieces and fold together to form a pleat on the clitoris. Anatomically, the outer lips cover the inner lips, i.e., the inner lips are located under the outer lips, so they are not noticeable in the external aspect.

By labiaplasty, it is often meant to eliminate defects in the inner lips rather than the outer lips. One of the most common genital aesthetic problems is labia minora being larger than normal or sagging due to various reasons. During labiaplasty, excess tissue in the overgrown or sagged inner lips is removed by the specialist physician and the labia are reshaped.

Why is labiaplasty performed?

Labiaplasty is considered a medical necessity in cases where hypertrophy of the inner lips causes recurrent vaginal and urinary infections, irritation, painful sexual intercourse (dyspareunia) and movement restriction despite treatment.

Structurally normal sized inner lips hang due to multiple deliveries, traumas during vaginal delivery, hormonal changes due to menopause, rapid weight gain and other reasons, and the outer lips become unable to completely close the inner lips. In women who have never given birth and whose labia minor is normal in size, sagging may occur due to the decrease in subcutaneous adipose tissue with age. In some women, one or both of the inner lips of the vagina is structurally larger (genetic) than normal and forms an asymmetrical appearance.

For any reason, sagging can create an aesthetically unpleasant image when it exceeds the acceptable dimensions, causing the person to feel bad and loss of self-confidence. Even if there is no medical necessity, it may affect the person's life in various ways. For example, sagging in the inner lips may prevent wearing swimsuits, bikinis or tight clothing when advanced. It can affect the work life of women from occupational groups related to sports and performing arts where physical appearance is prominent, and can cause loss of self-confidence and decrease in quality of life by affecting the sexual life of all women
